Common Buckthorn

Description:

Common Buckthorn leaves have an ovate shape with serrated margins. They are pinnate and simple with an opposite stem arrangment. The stem is a woody like a bush. The flowers are green with 4 petals like a cross. The fruit are black when ripe in dense clusters.

How to get rid of it?

Use a hand tool to pull up roots. This is best done on moist soil for the most efficient removal. Hebericide can also be used one the plant is cut down.

What to replace it with?

Common Buckthorn can be replaced with Eastern Hemlock an onatrio native.
